Benefits of Strength Training Pre- and Post-Menopause

Studies show that a decrease in estrogen during peri- and postmenopause is linked to muscle mass loss, decreasing energy expenditure and leading to weight gain. Lifting heavy not only builds muscle mass and increases strength, preserving our metabolism, but it also increases bone density, preventing osteoporosis.

But wait! That’s not all! There are a multitude of ways lifting weights can improve the quality of life in women.

  • Protects against osteoporosis

  • Improves balance and stability

  • Decreases risk of fractures

  • Increases metabolism

  • Helps with weight control

  • Decreases blood pressure

  • Protects against age-related muscular atrophy

  • Decreases joint pain

  • Decreases LDL cholesterol

  • Increases HDL cholesterol

  • Improves glycemic control

  • Improves symptoms of depression and anxiety

  • Increases neuromuscular function

  • Improves cardiovascular health

  • Improves memory and cognitive function

  • May help protect Alzheimer’s and dementia

In short, lifting heavy helps you stay healthier, move better, lift mood, decrease pain, and maintain independence.
